Feng-shui in your home

Feng-shui became known to Sri Lankans in the near past, and today, it has become as an important factor in the field of building as Waasthu.

The history of Feng-shui covers more than 3500 years in China. It was practiced way before the invention of the magic compass, to align a building in the  correct  way. In Chinese, “Feng-shui” means the balance of the most basic elements in creation-water and wind. Feng-shui teaches how to tap the cosmic energy to enhance our lives in a better and a positive manner. It is believed that the most positive energy in the universe, the cosmic energy, could only be harnessed  through wind and water and according to ancient records, Chinese royalty and aristocratic families in the far-gone years, have made use of the powers of the Feng-shui to enhance and safeguard their inheritance for generations. They believed in the powers of this study so much, that the common man was barred from using it for themselves. Feng-shui was also used to ward-off the ill effects of elements and to bring in prosperity, good health and happiness.

If you are building a new house or a building, and if you would like to use Feng-shui in your home to make it more positive-energy-oriented, Feng-shui  just doesn’t work only with symbols. Many people are interested to fill their homes with various symbols associated with Feng-shui art, yet, few understand that ones fate could not totally be changed by the use and practice of Feng-shui.

In Feng-shui, all human beings are grouped into two groups-East group and the West group. Every one of us belong to either of these groups. The fates of each person , if living together in one house, works to bring about fate of the total building that they live in, and this could, to a great extent, be influenced by the practice of Frng-shui so that each member reaps more positive energy from the universe to better their futures. If you are building anew, then this could be incorporated into the design plan quite easily and effectively. Feng-shui is known to bring-in 1/3 each of “heaven luck”, “man luck” and “earth luck” to a person or a building, bringing peace and harmony as ell as prosperity to it’s dwellers.

The many uses of granite

When a building is being built, be it a simple home or a bigger building , there is one thing which we are unable to do without. That is granite. It is the most strong material in building , which is used to withstand the weight of the building.
At the most basic level, metal stone are used in its most crude from for strengthening  the foundation. When laying the foundation. When laying the foundation, these are used in quantity in the base so be able to support the walls would be later built on them ,For the main columns , pillars and the concrete slab which separates the floors , it is used for the concrete mixture. In many different stages of building , it is used in various forms , sometimes to be visible , sometimes not.
In its more sophisticated polished  form , known as “granite” , it is used for the floor to provide a more high-end , modern look. Made in flat slabs of rock , smoothed and polished to a high sheen, granite slabs come in many different sizes and varying color and grain. The color and the grain differs depending on the rock base from which they were quarried. Apart from using granite on the floor, it is used as the work-tops in the pantry, in bathrooms as the base for the vanity, and in many other instances. Since it is highly durable , easy to maintain, gives a good finish and water resistant, it is one of the most popular materials among builders.
In its basic form as the metal stone and in its more sophisticated form as granite, it is also used to create art-works as well. Though it is a hard material to work with, it has been one of the most common materials used specially in yesteryear, in sculpture. Our heritage cities like Anuradhapura , Polonnaruwa , Sigiriya and many other places are full of these old sculptures in various sizes and forms, as examples and legacies of the old sculpture’s talents.

During ancient times, especially in cold climates, most of the bigger buildings were made using the metal stone, since it is energy efficient. The heat absorbed during the day from sunlight gets stored within the stone, helping keep the interiors warmer during the cold nights. Since the walls that were built back then were rather thicker and deeper, the interiors were safer from the elemental changes outside. Taken in this light, the metal stone, the granite is a very versatile material which comes in many forms, shapes and hues.
